Helen Lawrence

Fedora

Giordano

St. John's, Smith Square, London 1979
[Giordano's]forshadowing of Tosca is most remarkable in the central role, a part which belongs to Sarah Bernhardt in the spoken drama and which in the opera demands a singer of stamina and presence. Last night Helen Lawrence showed both these qualities to a high degree and added a consistently musical feeling for line. Everything she did was sung, not bawled, sobbed or murmured, and her confidence in the expressive power of her singing was amply justified. This was an exciting performance, climbing without strain to the passionate heights, and compellingly acted through the voice.
The Times
